Habert des Jarlons

Habert des Jarlons sits at 1890m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, east of Grenoble in Isère. The hut is accessible from the Cirque du Fer à Cheval trailhead near Allevard, a 2–2.5 hour hike gaining 700m. You can also approach from the Lac de Goillet side, adding an extra 30 minutes. The location puts you within striking distance of Pic de la Pointe du Midi and traverses across the Chaîne's eastern face, making it a solid basecamp for 2–3 day mountain routes rather than a major Alpine crossing.
The hut is small and straightforward: basic dormitory beds, no private rooms. Meals are simple mountain fare—expect hearty soup, bread, and modest protein. Water comes from a spring; the building dates from the 1950s and requires self-sufficiency in mind. It opens roughly June to September, depending on snow and maintenance. Check current status before planning, as staffing and opening dates vary. The atmosphere is quiet and local rather than busy.

Advance booking is essential even outside summer—aim for 2–3 weeks minimum. July and August weekends fill quickly. The hut does not take online reservations, so telephone or email is necessary. Bring a sleeping bag; they do not provide bedding.
