About

Refuge de la Soldanelle sits at 1,868m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, east of Grenoble in Isère. Most hikers approach from the Barrage du Gouffre d'Engins (parking at 1,390m), a 1h 45min walk following the torrent. The trail climbs steadily through forest before opening onto alpine meadow. A longer alternative starts from Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (2h 30min), crossing the Pas de l'Alpe. Both routes are well-marked and non-technical.

The refuge is a solid base for ridge traverses and peak bagging in Belledonne. Gîte Refuge de la Soldanelle operates year-round and sleeps around 30 people in dormitory beds. Half-board is standard. The hut has running water and a working kitchen. Showers are available (small fee). Winter access is possible but relies on conditions—contact ahead. Mobile signal is unreliable. Bring euros; they do not take cards.

Book directly with the refuge by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead, longer for July-August weekends. July and August are busy; September and early June see fewer groups. The hut is managed by FFCAM. If you're planning a high traverse of Belledonne (Pic de la Selle, Pariou, Aiguille de Jas), arriving mid-afternoon gives you a solid day either side. Water sources are reliable near the hut but scarce on the ridges above.
