About

L'Estive sits at 2,108m on the Plateau de Emparis, a high limestone terrace east of Grenoble in the Isère. The main approach is from Entraigues (45 minutes by car from Grenoble), where you park near the hamlet and walk 1 hour 45 minutes via the GR54 path. The terrain is open moorland with views north to Mont-Blanc and south across the Écrins massif. In summer, a shuttle bus runs from Entraigues; check locally for the timetable. Winter access is on foot only—the road closes after October. This is CAF/FFCAM territory, part of the wider Plateau de Emparis network of routes.
The refuge manages 40 beds in shared dorms. Half-board is standard (breakfast and dinner included). The kitchen serves straightforward mountain food; evening meals are communal. Water comes from a spring; showers are cold. The hut opens mid-May to mid-October. This is a working pasture area, so you'll share the plateau with herds in summer. The location works well as a base for day walks to the Pic de l'Étendard (2,296m, 3 hours return) or as a stage on the GR54 loop. Mountain bikers also use the hut.
Book direct by email or phone through the CAF directory. July and August fill quickly—reserve 8–10 weeks ahead. June, September and early October have more availability. The hut fills with school groups on weekends in summer, so aim for Tuesday to Thursday if possible. Half-board costs around €60–70 per person. Bring cash; card payments are unreliable. The hut offers demi-pension only; they do not serve lunch.
