Refuge de l'Étendard

Refuge de l'Étendard sits at 2,430m in the Isère, well positioned for traverses and day routes across the lower Écrins massif. The hut accesses the Chaîne de Belledonne and approaches to Pic de l'Étendard itself. Most parties arrive via the GR54 or from Vallée de la Romanche; allow 3–4 hours from the nearest road-head depending on your starting point. The terrain is straightforward hiking rather than scrambling, making it accessible to parties with basic mountain fitness.
The refuge holds 70 beds split across multiple dorms. Half-board is standard: evening meals are solid mountain cooking, breakfasts fuel your next day. Water comes from meltstreams; toilets are basic but functional. No shower. The FFCAM runs the hut seasonally, typically late June through mid-September, though spring and autumn shoulder seasons may operate on reduced hours—confirm before traveling. Cold months see closures.
Phone the hut directly to book. July and August fill fast; reserve 4–6 weeks ahead for guaranteed beds during peak season. June and September are quieter but weather is less stable. The hut prefers phone contact over email, so have a French speaker ready or use a translation app. Expect to pay roughly €30–40 per person for half-board. Turn up without a reservation and you may find yourself turned away or sleeping on the floor during busy weekends.
