About

Refuge des Culets sits at 2,242m in the Parc National de la Vanoise, above the Vallée de la Tarentaise. The hut is reached from Pralognan-la-Vanoise via the GR55 trail, a steady 4-5 hour walk gaining 900m through larch forest and alpine meadow. In winter and early spring, the approach follows the ski touring route from Pralognan. The hut also serves as a base for ascents of Mont Pourri (3,779m) and approaches to the Chamonix-Zermatt traverse route.
The refuge is a small, intimate mountain hut run by FFCAM, with capacity for around 40 people in dorm rooms. The guardian provides half-board meals (dinner and breakfast) using local produce. Water comes from springs nearby. The hut operates from June to September, with variable opening dates depending on snow conditions. Mobile phone coverage is weak to absent.
Book directly with the hut for July and August stays. Contact them at least 4-6 weeks ahead for peak season weekends. The refuge fills quickly during school holidays (early July, late August) and when weather windows open for mont-blanc-facing peaks. Solo hikers can often find beds with shorter notice. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure water and settle in before dinner service around 7pm.
