About

Refuge de Varzeron sits at 2,543m in the Massif de la Vanoise, accessed from the village of Pralognan-la-Vanoise. The standard approach takes 3.5 hours from the Télécabine de Pralognan (1,420m). The trail climbs steeply through forest then alpine meadow, crossing the Torrent de Varzeron before reaching the hut. In winter and early spring, avalanche risk requires careful assessment. The hut lies within Parc National de la Vanoise and makes a logical base for ascents of Mont Bochor (3,025m) and Pointe de Pralognan (3,025m), as well as traverses toward Refuge de Péclet-Poly.
The refuge has capacity for 40 people in dormitory beds. Meals are served daily during the season: breakfast, packed lunch, and a three-course dinner with wine included. The hut is staffed from mid-June to mid-September, with a caretaker present through early October for self-catering. There is no shower; a sink and cold water are available. The hut operates gas heating and a wood stove. Mobile signal is weak or absent. Bring a headtorch and expect basic mountain hut conditions.
Book directly with the guardian (contact via FFCAM or Pralognan tourist office) or contact Parc National de la Vanoise. July and August are fully booked 2–3 months in advance. June and September offer more flexibility. The hut fills quickly on weekends. Arrive by early afternoon to guarantee a meal. A camping area exists nearby for overflow.
