Refuge de Prariond

Refuge de Prariond sits at 2,324m in the northern Vanoise, accessed from Bonneval-en-Tarentaise via the Tarentaise Valley. The approach takes 2.5 to 3 hours on a well-marked trail that gains 900m steadily through forest before breaking into open alpine terrain. The hut is ideally positioned for traverses across the Vanoise massif and scrambles to nearby peaks including Mont-Pourri and Col de la Loze. Day-hikers also use it as a turnaround point for the valley views. Mule trains still resupply the hut, a reminder of its age and remoteness.
The refuge manages around 60 beds across simple dormitory rooms and holds FFCAM standards for mountain hospitality. Expect basic but clean accommodation, hot showers, and reliable dinner and breakfast service. The guardians cook hearty evening meals and pack lunches on request. The hut opens mid-June through September only; confirm opening dates before travelling. Mobile signal is unreliable. Winter access requires ski-mountaineering skills and the hut closes completely.
Book direct by phone or email as early as possible. July and August weekends fill 8 to 10 weeks ahead. Mid-June and September offer more flexibility. The hut operates on the honor system for payment methods; confirm cash-only policies or card acceptance when you reserve. Arrive by early evening to eat with other guests and gather route information from the guardian.
