Rifugio Cibrario

Rifugio Cibrario sits at 2,616m on the border between France and Italy in the Savoie massif. Reach it from the Vallée de la Maurienne via the village of Bonneval-en-Maurienne, then drive to the Barrage de Tignes trailhead (roughly 1 hour from Chambéry). The hut is 4-5 hours on foot from there, gaining 800m through open alpine terrain. This is accessible hiking rather than technical climbing.
The rifugio accommodates 42 people in shared dormitories. Meals are provided for residents: expect simple mountain fare focused on sustaining energy. There is no WiFi, so this is genuinely remote. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk—confirm with management before attempting December through March visits. Hot water and basic toilets are standard; the setting is functional rather than luxurious.

June, September and early October are quieter and often better weather windows in this exposed location. Specify your arrival date, number of people, and dietary requirements when booking. The hut management speaks Italian primarily; basic French or English helps but prepare translations if needed. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is the standard arrangement.
