Schwandalpe

Schwandalpe sits at 936m in the Allgäu Alps east of Sonthofen. Reach the hut on foot from Sonthofen village in 2.5 hours via the Oberstdorf road and marked trail through mixed forest. The approach is steady but manageable. The hut works as a base for day walks into the surrounding Allgäu limestone terrain or as a waypoint on longer traverses toward the Ötztal.

The DAV-managed hut sleeps around 80 guests across dormitory rooms and a handful of private doubles. The kitchen serves dinner and breakfast daily during the season (year-round with reduced winter hours). The hut has running water, hot showers, and a small common room. Meals focus on hearty Bavarian fare and vegetarian options. Self-catering is not permitted, though you can buy basic supplies like chocolate and energy bars at reception.

Book directly by phone with the hut warden. July and August require reservations at least 3 weeks ahead. The hut fills weekends year-round, so book 2 weeks minimum for Saturday nights in shoulder seasons. Weekday visits in May-June and September are easier to accommodate without advance notice. The hut handles groups; notify them if you're bringing a party of 8 or more.
