Alpe Hohenschwand

Alpe Hohenschwand sits at 961m in the Allgäu Alps, a working dairy farm and hut combined. The approach is straightforward: from Oberstdorf, drive to Reichenbach, then hike 1.5 hours uphill to the alp. You can also walk from the Oytal valley in 2–2.5 hours. The hut serves as a base for exploring the gentler, forested ridges of the Allgäu rather than high alpine terrain—good for hikers who want mountain air without the exposure.
The DAV-managed hut (DAV Sektion SSV Ulm 1846 e.V.) offers around 50 beds in simple rooms and dormitories. Meals focus on regional Swabian and Bavarian cooking; the kitchen uses dairy products from the farm itself. Breakfast and packed lunches are available. Water and basic facilities are reliable. The hut opens year-round, though staffing and meal service vary seasonally—contact ahead for winter visits. This is working-farm hospitality, not a polished mountain lodge.
Book directly with the hut for weekends and summer weeks (June–September). Two weeks ahead is usually safe for Saturday stays, though July and August occasionally fill. Email or phone ahead to confirm meal service before you arrive, especially outside peak season. Weekday visits rarely require advance booking. The hut's mix of hiking access and farm setting makes it popular with local groups and families, so expect a more casual atmosphere than high-altitude huts.
