Alpe Reith

Alpe Reith sits at 1,430m in the Ammergau Alps, a DAV hut in the Oberammergau area. Reach it from Oberammergau village in 2 hours on a clear hiking path that climbs steadily through mixed forest. The route follows the Ammer valley south before switchbacking up to the alp. Most hikers approach from the Oberammergau train station, which connects directly to Munich. Winter access is possible but depends on snow conditions.
The hut sleeps around 40 people in mixed dorms and a few small private rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Bavarian meals at lunch and dinner—book ahead if you want hot food. Water comes from the spring on the alp itself. The hut operates year-round, though staffing is lighter November to March. Basic facilities include toilets and a small shower. This is a working dairy alp as well as a hiking hut, so expect cattle and a rural feel rather than a destination hut atmosphere.
Book directly by phone or email, especially for weekends and July-August when it fills. The hut prefers phone calls for immediate confirmation. Plan 4-6 weeks ahead for peak season. Half-board (bed and meals) is significantly cheaper than buying meals à la carte. Check current opening hours before visiting in shoulder seasons.
