Hölltalhütte

The Hölltalhütte sits at 1460m in the Ammergau Alps, accessible from the village of Oberammergau in about 3 hours on foot. The main approach follows the Hölltal (Hell Valley) trail, which gains 700m steadily through forest before opening to alpine meadows near the hut. You can also approach from the Linderhof side. The hut serves as a base for traverses across the Ammergau range and ascents of peaks like the Scheinberg and Hochplatte.
The hut has capacity for about 70 guests split between simple dormitory and a few double rooms. Meals focus on Bavarian fare—the kitchen serves hearty soups, stews, and regional cheese specialties. Breakfast and half-board options are available. The hut has running water, but showers are limited; bring a head torch for the approach in low light. The hut operates year-round, though staffing and food service may be reduced in winter months—confirm conditions before visiting outside summer.
Book direct with the hut or through the DAV platform if you're a member. July and August require booking at least 3 months ahead; shoulder seasons (May–June, September) are less crowded but still busy on weekends. The hut fills quickly during school holidays.
