Münchner Haus

Münchner Haus sits at 2,959m in the Ammergau Alps, a serious position that rewards the effort to get there. Reach it from Unterammergau via the Schachenbach valley in 4 to 5 hours. The route climbs steadily through alpine meadow and scree. From Schloss Linderhof, allow 3.5 hours on a steeper, more direct path. Winter access is unreliable; plan to visit May through October.
The hut sleeps around 60 people in a mix of dormitories and private rooms. DAV members get priority booking and pay lower rates. The kitchen serves dinner and breakfast; bring your own lunch or buy supplies at the hut. There is no shower. Water comes from the mountain. The hut sits in genuine alpine terrain and works well as a base for ascents of peaks in the Ammergau group, particularly for mountaineers wanting to acclimatize before more serious climbs.
Book well ahead for July and August—expect 6 to 8 weeks' notice. The hut takes phone reservations only; email enquiries get slower responses. Become a DAV member before booking if you plan multiple alpine hut stays; membership costs pay for itself quickly through hut discounts. Weekends in summer fill fast. Shoulder season (June and September) offers better availability and more stable weather than midsummer.
