Sebenalpe

Sebenalpe sits at 1640m in the Ammergau Alps, a quieter corner of the Bavarian Alps east of Füssen. Reach it from Saulgrub village in about 2 hours on foot, climbing through mixed forest on well-marked paths. The hut works as a base for ridge walks across the Ammergau range and approaches to Hochplötzl (2051m) and the Säuling (2047m). You can also reach it from Steingaden in roughly 3 hours via the Vierer-Hütten-Weg trail system.
The hut is a simple mountain inn with around 30 beds in shared rooms. It serves hearty Bavarian fare—the Kaiserschmarrn is solid. There's no shower on-site, but water is available. Opening dates typically run May through October, though Easter weekends often see the hut operating. The owner maintains it as a working dairy farm operation as much as a hikers' hut, so expect authentic mountain hospitality rather than polished service.
Book directly by phone or email, especially for summer weekends and the July-August peak. Thursday and Friday nights fill quickly. The hut prefers groups book at least 2 weeks ahead. Arrive early if dropping in without a reservation—capacity is limited and walk-ins aren't guaranteed beds. It's a DAV hut, so membership brings a modest discount on overnight rates.
