Waxensteinhütte

Waxensteinhütte sits at 1384m in the Ammergau Alps between Unterammergau and Linderhof Castle. The most direct approach starts from Unterammergau village and takes 2.5 hours on a marked trail that climbs steadily through beech and pine forest. Alternative routes approach from the Linderhof direction or via Schloss Linderhof (45 minutes from the hut). The hut works as a base for ascents of Waxenstein (1533m) and traverses across the Ammergau range.
Waxensteinhütte is a DAV-managed hut with 65 beds split across multiple rooms. The kitchen serves hot meals at lunch and dinner; book dinner the evening before or that morning. Water comes from a spring; the hut has basic dormitory facilities with blankets and pillows provided. It opens mid-May through October, with extended opening around summer holidays. Winter mountaineering access is possible but you must check conditions directly with the hut.
The hut draws steady weekend traffic, especially from Munich families. Book beds 2-3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. DAV members get priority and discounted rates; membership costs €75 annually and quickly pays for itself. Call or email to reserve, or book through the DAV website. Expect to pay €20-30 per night for non-members, less for members. The hut lies inside the Ammergau Alps nature reserve; respect the conservation rules posted on arrival.
