Obere Firstalm

Obere Firstalm sits at 1,369m in the Ammergau Alps south of Oberammergau. Reach it from the village of Unterammergau—park near the church and follow the marked trail southeast into the Firstalbach valley. The hut lies roughly 2 hours' walk from the road end. The route gains 600m steadily through mixed forest, with water crossings in the Firstalbach itself during snowmelt. This is a working mountain pasture as much as a hut, set in high meadow country that rewards day hikes across the surrounding ridges.
The Obere Firstalm operates as a simple alpine dairy farm offering basic accommodation and meals to hikers. Capacity runs to around 30 beds in mixed dorms. The kitchen serves traditional Bavarian fare—expect hearty soups, roasted meats, and fresh dairy products. There is no WiFi. Water comes from the mountain spring. The hut opens May through October, though check before visiting in shoulder months as opening dates depend on pasture conditions and staffing. It's a DAV-affiliated hut.
Book directly by email or phone well ahead for July and August—aim for 6 weeks minimum. Weekends fill faster than weekdays. The hut lies off the main tourist trails, so shoulder seasons (June, September, early October) are quieter and still reliable. Confirm opening dates before making the drive from Oberammergau.
