Weißenburger Hütte

Bavarian Alps, Germany

About

The Weißenburger Hütte sits at 1,657m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, roughly 8km south of Berchtesgaden town. Reach it from the Hintersee carpark via the Archenkanzel trail—expect 2.5 to 3 hours on foot. The hut is also accessible from Schellenbergalp to the east, a steeper approach via Schellenberger Haus. The location works well as a base for day walks into the surrounding limestone ridges or as a waypoint on longer routes through the northern Berchtesgaden massif.
The hut holds around 40 beds in shared rooms and a few doubles. Meals focus on traditional Bavarian fare: hearty soups, schnitzel, spätzle, and good bread. The kitchen caters to vegetarians and provides packed lunches for hikers. Hot showers are available, though water is sometimes rationed in dry spells. The hut operates year-round, though staffing and services thin considerably in November and early December. Winter access requires proper boots and often snowshoes; avalanche risk is low on the standard routes, but check conditions before setting out.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut fills quickly during school holidays. Contact the DAV-managed hut directly by phone or email to reserve. Arrive by early afternoon if you plan to eat dinner there—the kitchen closes at 8pm. Pay in cash or by bank transfer; card payment is not available. The hut sits on private land with controlled access, so stay on marked trails.
