Braunauer Hut

Braunauer Hütte sits at 1,210m in the Chiemgau Alps, roughly 90 minutes' walk south of the village of Aschau im Chiemgau. The hut serves as a base for day hikes across the Chiemgau range and longer traverses toward the Kampenwand and Hochplötzl. Most hikers approach from Aschau, following the valley trail steadily upward through mixed forest. The elevation gain is modest—around 400m—making this a reasonable afternoon push even with a pack. Summer access is straightforward; winter routes depend on snow conditions, so check ahead before December trips.
Braunauer Hütte is a DAV hut with around 50 beds split between dormitory and smaller rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Bavarian meals at lunch and dinner; half-board is standard. Simple facilities include running water, basic heating, and an outhouse or flush toilets depending on the section. The hut opens year-round, though staffing is reduced in November and April. Summer weekends and school holidays fill quickly. Water comes from a spring nearby.
Book directly with the hut for July and August; aim for 2-3 months ahead. During shoulder seasons (May–June, September–October), 2-4 weeks is usually sufficient. Phone ahead in winter to confirm staffing and path conditions. The hut accepts cash and bank transfer; verify payment methods when you call.
