Gotzenalm

Gotzenalm sits at 1,685m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, accessible from multiple valleys in the region. The main approach follows the Königssee valley from the north—allow 2.5 to 3 hours from Schönau am Königssee. From the south, the Röthbach valley route takes similar time. Both paths are well-marked and suitable for fit hikers. The hut serves as a basecamp for ridge walks and peak bagging across the northern limestone walls of the Berchtesgaden massif.
Gotzenalm operates as a traditional Bavarian mountain hut run by the DAV. The hut sleeps around 40 guests in mixed and small private rooms with basic alpine furnishings. No shower facilities are available—bring a washcloth and accept the mountain way. The kitchen serves hearty suppers and full breakfasts; packed lunches are available on request. Water comes from the spring; toilets are outside. The hut typically opens mid-May through October, depending on snow conditions and staffing. Weather can change rapidly at this elevation, so check forecasts before heading out.
Book by phone with the hut keeper at least 2 weeks ahead, earlier if visiting July or August. Weekends fill faster than weekdays. The hut uses no online booking system, so a direct call is essential. Expect to pay around €25–30 for bed and breakfast, with dinner adding another €12–15. Cash payment is standard practice. Arrive by mid-afternoon to settle in before darkness.
