Grubenbachhütte

The Grubenbachhütte sits at 1,531m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, a solid base for hiking the limestone peaks and forested ridges of this western corner of the range. Reach it from Schönau am Königssee by hiking up the Königssee valley, following the Grütenbach stream for roughly 2.5 hours. The approach is steady and well-marked, gaining around 500m elevation on a mix of forest trail and alpine meadow. You can also access the hut from the Funtensee cirque to the south, a longer but more scenic route through higher terrain.
The hut is a modest operation, typically holding 30–40 guests. It serves hearty Bavarian fare—expect schnitzel, soup, bread and cheese at dinner, coffee and cake in the afternoon. Basic dormitory and double rooms with communal showers are standard. The hut operates year-round, though winter traffic is light and the road access may be unreliable in heavy snow. It's run by the DAV and caters primarily to hikers and base-camp visitors rather than through-walkers.
Book directly by phone several months ahead if you're targeting July or August. The hut fills quickly with families and local hiking groups on weekends year-round. Weekday visits in June or September offer more flexibility. Half-board (bed and dinner) is typically obligatory—confirm current rates and meal options when you call.
