Gsengalmhütte

Gsengalmhütte sits at 1,447m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, a solid base for hiking in one of Bavaria's most dramatic limestone ranges. Reach it from Schönau am Königssee on foot in roughly 2.5 hours via the Königssee valley. The approach is steady rather than steep—well-marked and manageable for anyone with basic fitness. This hut sits deep in the mountains but doesn't require scrambling or technical skill to access.
The hut sleeps 20 people across simple dormitory-style rooms. Meals are served—expect straightforward Bavarian food, hearty and filling. There's running water and basic toilets. No shower. The hut opens year-round, though weather dictates practicality in winter; most visitors come May through October. It's a working mountain hut, not a hotel—comfort is functional, not luxurious. The DAV operates it as part of the Alpine Club network.
Book directly with the hut well ahead for July and August; 4–6 weeks minimum. Outside peak season, 2–3 weeks is usually enough. Half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast) is standard. Bring cash—card payments are unreliable in these mountains. The hut is popular with hikers tackling the Watzmann massif and traverses of the Königssee basin, so weekends fill quickly year-round.
