Laufener Hut

Laufener Hütte sits at 1,726m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, south of Bad Reichenhall. Most hikers approach from Weißbach an der Alm in Austria (allow 3–3.5 hours) or from the Rabenweid area on the German side (2.5–3 hours). The hut is also reachable from Thumsee via the Rauschberggebiet. It serves as a solid staging point for traverses across the Berchtesgaden limestone plateau and for ascents of Hochstaufen (1,531m) and Hochkaltmassiv approaches.
The hut offers 60 beds in mixed and smaller rooms, with a decent kitchen providing hearty meals—expect Bavarian Alpine fare and reliable vegetarian options. There is no electricity; the hut operates on water from the nearby spring. Half-board is standard. Laufener Hütte operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk in gullies on approach routes. Managed by the DAV (Deutscher Alpenverein), it maintains the standard of hospitality and mountain safety typical of the association.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer weekends and July–August. Contact the hut directly by phone or email well in advance. During peak season, accommodation fills quickly. Winter visits should be planned with the hut manager to confirm access and conditions. Day visitors are welcome for meals if beds are available.
