Illighütte

Berchtesgaden Alps, Germany
About
The Illighütte stands at 1,564m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, on the southern slopes of the Hochkalter massif. Reach it from Inzell in 4–5 hours via the Mühlbach valley, a steady but relentless climb through forest that opens onto alpine meadow. The final approach crosses exposed terrain with cables fixed in places—standard scrambling for the area. You can also approach from Ruhpolding in 5–6 hours, a longer but less steep variant. Both routes are well-marked and maintained by the DAV.
The hut accommodates around 30 people across mixed dorms and a handful of doubles. Meals are simple and filling: hearty soups, schnitzel, and substantial breakfasts. The water source is reliable year-round. Toilets are basic but functional. The hut operates year-round, though winter access requires mountain experience and avalanche awareness—the approach can become serious after heavy snow. From here, climbers and scramblers reach Hochkalter (2,607m) in 2–3 hours via a straightforward rocky ridge. The views across the Berchtesgaden Alps compensate for the exposed, wind-hammered summit.
Book directly by phone or email at least 2 months ahead for July and August weekends. Winter weekends fill quickly with ski mountaineers. The hut is quieter midweek and in spring (May–June) when routes through the Berchtesgaden Alps are snow-free but not yet crowded. Half-board is standard and mandatory in peak season.
