Rettenegghütte

Rettenegghütte sits at 1211m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, a short walk from the village of Schönau am Königssee. The hut is accessible year-round via a well-marked 1.5-hour hike from Schönau or a 2-hour approach from the Königssee car park. Most hikers use it as a base for day trips into the Schrainbach valley or as a convenient stop on longer routes through the northern Berchtesgaden range.
The hut accommodates around 50 guests in simple dormitory rooms and a few private doubles. Meals are hearty and generous—expect Bavarian fare with vegetarian options. The DAV manages the hut, so half-board prices are reasonable for members. The small bar and sitting area offer views across the valley. The hut operates year-round, though winter visits require careful route planning and avalanche awareness. Water and heating are reliable.
Book directly by email or phone at least 6 weeks ahead for weekends between May and October. July and August demand reservations 3 months in advance. The hut closes occasionally for maintenance in late autumn, so confirm opening dates before planning a trip. Payment is in cash or by bank transfer only—bring euros and plan accordingly.
