Niedergadenalm

Niedergadenalm sits at 1,200m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, accessible via multiple routes from the Königssee valley. The most direct approach starts from Schönau am Königssee and climbs 600m in roughly 2.5 hours. Alternative access routes branch from the Wimbach valley to the south. The hut makes a logical day-hike destination or a basecamp for exploring the surrounding limestone ridges and mixed forests that characterize this corner of the Alps.

The alm operates as a working cattle farm with basic guest facilities. Capacity is modest—typically 15 to 20 beds in simple dormitory rooms. The kitchen serves solid Bavarian fare, from hearty soups and roasted meats to cheese and bread. You'll find a common room warmed by tile stove in cooler months. Water comes from mountain springs. Expect no showers, no electricity in rooms, and no wifi. The season runs May through October, weather dependent. This is proper mountain accommodation, not a resort.
