Karhütte

The Karhütte sits at 1718m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, accessible from Bad Reichenhall via the Karlbach valley. The approach takes roughly 2.5 hours on a well-marked trail that gains 700m steadily through forest before opening to alpine meadow. You can also reach the hut from Inzell, adding 3 hours to your day. The location works well as a base for ridge walks toward the Hochstaufen (1531m) or as a stop on longer traverses through the northern limestone ranges.

The hut is a working DAV facility that opens year-round, making it reliable for shoulder-season trips when other huts close. It accommodates around 30 people in mixed dorms. The warden serves simple meals—expect hearty soup, schnitzel, and käsespätzle—and keeps a good stock of local beer. The kitchen facilities are basic but functional. Water comes from the mountain spring. The hut has no electricity but generates enough power for lights and phone charging. Winter access requires snowshoes or skis once the valley snow line rises.

Book directly by email or phone as far ahead as possible. July and August fill weeks in advance, particularly Friday and Saturday nights. May through June and September through October are quieter but still worth booking 4–6 weeks early. The warden speaks German primarily, so have a German speaker ready for phone calls or send email in English with specific dates.
