Stuhlalm

Stuhlalm sits at 1467m on the eastern flank of the Berchtesgaden Alps, above the Königssee valley. Reach it from Schönau am Königssee in 2.5 hours via the Röthbach gorge trail—a steady climb through beech forest that opens onto high pasture. The route follows marked paths the entire way; no scrambling required. The hut works as a day destination or overnight base for ridge walks toward the Hochkalter and Watzmann massif.

The hut offers 30 bed spaces in basic multi-bed rooms. Meals focus on regional Bavarian fare—expect schnitzel, käsespätzle, and hearty soups. The kitchen serves breakfast and dinner to guests; lunch is available for walkers passing through. Water comes from a spring on the property. The hut operates year-round but staffing is lighter in winter—check ahead if visiting November to March. Toilets are outside; showers are not available. This is a working alm (alpine pasture) in addition to its role as a hut, so expect cattle on the surrounding slopes during summer.

Book directly by email well in advance for July and August weekends; July is typically full by June. June, September, and early October offer better availability and good weather.
