Werfener Hut

Werfener Hütte sits at 1969m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, directly above the Wörner valley. Reach it from Schönau am Königssee via the village of Wörner—allow 2.5 to 3 hours on a well-marked path that climbs steadily through beech forest, then alpine meadow. The final approach crosses open terrain with views north toward the Königssee. This is a DAV hut, so members get lower rates than non-members.

The hut sleeps around 40 people in dormitory rooms and a few private doubles. Meals are straightforward: hearty Bavarian fare at dinner and breakfast included with overnight stays. The kitchen serves light lunches to day hikers. Facilities include a heated common room, outside seating on clear days, and basic washrooms. Open year-round, though expect reduced services November to March. Winter access requires good conditions and mountain sense.

Book 3 to 4 months ahead for July and August weekends. July is busiest. Contact the hut directly by phone or email—the warden manages bookings personally. Non-member overnight rates run €35–45. Werfener Hütte makes a logical base for day walks in the Berchtesgaden range and sits on the route between Schönau and the Wimbach gorge if you're linking huts over several days.
