Elmaualm Werfenweng

Elmaualm sits at 1533m in the Werfenweng valley, a quiet corner of the Berchtesgaden Alps well south of the main tourist routes. Reach it from Werfenweng village (allow 1.5 hours on foot) via a steady climb through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The approach is straightforward and suitable for fit hikers carrying a moderate pack. Winter access depends on snow conditions and valley road maintenance.
The hut sleeps 22 across simple dormitory rooms. Meals are served daily—expect solid regional fare rather than haute cuisine. The DAV-affiliated operation runs basic facilities: an outhouse or composting toilet, hand-pumped or gravity-fed water, and heating from a wood stove or similar. No WiFi. The hut typically opens May through October, though exact dates shift with snow melt and staffing. Check ahead if planning shoulder-season visits. This is a working mountain dairy base as much as a hiking hut.

The hut fills fastest during school holidays and good-weather windows in June and September. Arrive with cash in hand—remote location, limited card facilities.
