Freilassinger Hut

Freilassinger Hütte sits at 1500m in the Berchtesgaden Alps above the town of Freilassing. Reach it in 2.5 hours from Freilassing via the Ruhpolding valley, following marked trails through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The hut serves as a base for day walks to local peaks and as a waypoint on longer ridge traverses in the northern limestone massifs. The approach is moderate and suitable for families with hiking experience.
The hut is a traditional DAV lodge run by the Freilassing section. It sleeps around 60 people in mixed dormitories and a few private rooms. The kitchen serves hearty dinners, breakfast, and packed lunches. Water comes from a spring. The hut operates year-round, though winter visits require prior notice and snow equipment. Facilities include a simple dining hall and outdoor seating with views toward the Hochkalter and surrounding peaks.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email well ahead for weekends and school holidays. July and August are busiest; book 4–6 weeks in advance. Weekday visits in shoulder seasons (May, June, September, October) have more availability. The hut is popular with DAV members and families doing weekend trips from nearby towns, so expect a lively atmosphere rather than solitude.
