About

The Bärenhütte stands at 1490m in the Chiemgau Alps, roughly 90 minutes walk above Reit im Winkl. Park in the village and follow the well-marked trail through beech forest, climbing steadily to reach the hut. The approach is moderate but relentless. From the hut, you can push higher into the Chiemgau ridgeline or descend to the Marquartstein area for loop options.

The hut offers 80 beds across simple rooms, a dining hall, and a kitchen that serves hot meals. Expect traditional Bavarian food: soups, schnitzel, kaiserschmarrn. The hut runs year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and your fitness. Staff are DAV members and maintain the place to standard Alpine Club expectations—basic but reliable. There's no electricity in rooms. Showers are available. Water comes from the spring behind the building.

Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or email; they accept reservations for groups of any size. Single hikers can usually walk in, especially mid-week. Pay by cash or bank transfer. The hut closes only on Mondays and Tuesdays outside summer season. Winter visits require confirmation beforehand, as the caretaker is not always present.
