Herbstalm

Herbstalm sits at 1,536m in the Chiemgau Alps, roughly 2.5 hours' walk from Grassau. The approach climbs steadily through mixed forest along the Herbst valley—well-marked trail, no scrambling. Most hikers approach from the north via the Priental valley or from Sachrang to the south. The hut works as both a destination and a rest point on longer traverses of the Chiemgau. You'll reach it in a morning from valley trailheads.
The hut holds around 35 guests in simple rooms (mostly 2-4 bed). Full board and half-board options are available; the kitchen serves traditional Bavarian fare. Hot showers are available. The hut operates year-round, though staffing is minimal December through February—contact ahead if visiting outside peak season. It's a DAV hut, so members get bed discounts.
Book directly by email or phone, especially for weekends in July and August. June and September offer better availability with equally good weather. Winter visits are possible but confirm opening status first. The hut accepts cash and bank transfer; card payment is not always reliable so arrange payment method when you book.
