About
The Trostberger Hütte sits at 1,400m in the Chiemgau Alps, a half-day walk from Reit im Winkl. The approach takes 2.5 to 3 hours on a well-marked trail through forest and Alpine meadow. The hut serves as a base for ridge walks along the Chiemgauer Kamm and day routes to Hochplatte (1,531m) and Sonntagshorn (1,694m). Winter access depends on snow conditions; the trail is hikeable year-round but exposed in storms.
The DAV-affiliated hut has 50 beds split across two dormitories and a few smaller rooms. Half-board is standard (dinner and breakfast included with overnight). The kitchen prepares good regional fare. Water comes from a spring. There is no electricity beyond basic lighting, and no Wi-Fi or mobile signal. The hut opens from May through October; weekends from November to April depend on snow and staffing. Winter mountaineers can arrange winter camping outside.
Book directly by phone or email at least 3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. July Saturdays and Austrian school holidays (late July through early August) fill fastest. Single-night stays are possible mid-week. The warden prefers cash; card payments incur a fee. Plan to arrive by mid-afternoon to secure a spot at dinner service.
