Hochgernhaus

Hochgernhaus sits at 1461m on the Hochgern massif in the Chiemgau Alps. Reach it from Marquartstein in the Siegsdorf Valley in roughly 2.5 hours on foot. The trail climbs steadily through mixed forest before opening onto alpine pasture. From Bad Reichenhall, the approach via Reichenhall-Bad is longer but follows established DAV routes. Winter access requires skis or snowshoes when snow covers the upper sections. The hut serves as a natural rest point for traverses across the Chiemgau ridge.
Hochgernhaus has 29 beds split across multiple rooms. The hut serves hot meals at dinner and provides packed lunches for the next day. Breakfast is included. The kitchen supplies tea and coffee throughout the day. You'll find basic dormitory-style sleeping arrangements with communal washrooms. The hut warden maintains the building year-round and can advise on current conditions and route variations. It opens spring through autumn and operates weekends only in shoulder seasons. Winter mountaineering groups can arrange stays by prior agreement.
Book 3-4 months ahead for July and August weekends. Phone the hut directly during afternoon hours (typically 14:00-17:00) or email your dates and group size. A deposit secures your reservation. The hut fills quickly during school holidays. Weekday visits in June and September offer far better availability and a quieter experience.
