Passauer Hut

The Passauer Hütte stands at 2,051m in the Chiemgau Alps, accessible from the Marquartstein area in southern Bavaria. Most hikers approach via the Greisbach valley from Marquartstein village, a 4.5-hour push that gains 1,200m elevation. The route is well-marked and heavily used. In summer, strong hikers can make it in under 4 hours. The hut sits on the main ridge walk between Hochries and Hochgern, making it a natural stop for multi-day traverses across the northern limestone ranges.
The hut sleeps around 100 people in dormitories and a few double rooms. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard, and the kitchen handles vegetarian requests reliably. Showers are available, a rarity at this elevation. The hut operates year-round, though staffing is reduced in winter and you should contact ahead if visiting November to March. Water comes from a reliable spring. Views sweep across the Chiemgau toward Austria, though the hut itself is functional rather than lavish.
Book 2-3 months ahead for July and August weekends. The hut fills regularly with DAV members and guided groups. Contact the DAV directly or book through their website; the hut also accepts walk-ins on quieter days outside peak season. Staff speak English. Arrive by late afternoon to secure a place during busy periods.
