Plenkalm

Plenkalm sits at 1500m in the Chiemgau Alps, accessible from the Reit im Winkl valley. The approach takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours on foot from the valley, making it a moderate half-day walk. The hut serves as a base for ridge traversals and peaks throughout the Chiemgau range, including approaches to Hochplötte and the surrounding limestone formations. Winter access is possible but conditions vary—check with the hut before planning a winter visit.

The DAV-managed hut (operated by Sektion Turner-Alpen-Kränzchen) offers basic alpine hut accommodation with dormitory beds and private rooms. The kitchen serves traditional Bavarian meals at dinner, with breakfast available. Water comes from mountain springs. The hut typically operates year-round, though availability may be limited in deep winter. Expect no electric heating in sleeping areas—bring a sleeping bag rated for cold nights. The outdoor terrace has views into the Chiemgau valleys.

Book direct with the hut well ahead during summer months (July–August). Email or phone in the off-season to confirm opening dates and current conditions. The hut fills quickly on weekends and during school holidays. Arrival by mid-afternoon gives you time to settle and eat before darkness. DAV members receive small discounts on accommodation.
