Spielberghaus

Spielberghaus sits at 1,320m in the Chiemgau Alps, south of Marquartstein in the Ruhpolding area. Reach it in 2.5 hours on foot from Ruhpolding village via marked trails through mixed forest and meadow. The walk gains 520m steadily but is well-signed and suitable for fit hikers. Mountain bikers can access the hut via forest roads from Ruhpolding in roughly the same time. In winter, snowshoe and ski touring routes connect to the hut when conditions allow.

The DAV-affiliated hut sleeps 40 across simple rooms. Meals focus on solid Bavarian fare—expect schnitzel, käsespätzle, and seasonal game specials. The kitchen provides packed lunches if you order ahead. Water comes from a spring on the property. The hut has no electricity or heating beyond a wood stove in the dining area, so bring a headlamp and warm layers even in summer. Open year-round, though February and March see variable staffing depending on snow cover. Toilets are outside.

Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or email to reserve. The nearest town, Ruhpolding, has shops and restaurants if you need supplies before heading up. Solo hikers often find beds in shared rooms on short notice, but groups should plan ahead. Winter access depends on weather—call before you go if snow is forecast.
