Steger Kaserei

Steger Kaserei sits at 1,533m on the Hochplatte in the Chiemgau Alps, above the Marquartstein valley. The hut is reached in 2.5 hours from Marquartstein village heading southeast toward the Hochplatte ridge. You'll climb 800m through mixed forest and Alpine meadow. The direct approach is straightforward and well-marked, making this a logical base for exploring the eastern Chiemgau ridges.

This is an Alpine dairy farm that offers hut accommodation rather than a purpose-built hut. The building sleeps around 30 people in simple bunk rooms. The kitchen serves hearty mountain food—expect traditional Bavarian fare, including their own dairy products. Meals are served at fixed times; book your dinner when you arrive. Water is reliable. There are basic washing facilities. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow and weather. This is a working farm, not a clubhouse, so the atmosphere is working rather than social.

Book directly by phone before arriving. Call ahead to confirm they have beds available, particularly on weekends and during school holidays. Summer weekends (June through September) fill quickly. The hut has no email booking system, so a call is essential. Arrive by early afternoon to secure your place and allow time for meals. The hut closes during heavy snow if the access track becomes impassable, so check conditions if visiting between December and March.
