Tortalalm Hochleger

Tortalalm Hochleger sits at 1600m on the eastern slopes of the Wetterstein range, above the Leutasch valley. Reach it from Mittenwald or via the Leutasch gorge, which takes 2–2.5 hours on foot. The approach is steady rather than technical, making it accessible to hikers with basic fitness. The hut serves as a base for ascents in the Wetterstein, including routes to the Zugspitze massif and surrounding peaks.

The hut is a DAV-affiliated refuge with around 50 beds split across dormitory and small private rooms. Full meals are served daily; the kitchen handles vegetarian requests well. Showers are available. Water comes from the spring system above the hut. The facility operates year-round, though staffing levels drop in shoulder seasons—check ahead before visiting November to March. Electricity is limited, and the hut runs on sustainable systems suited to its remote location.

Book directly with the hut for July and August; aim for 4–6 weeks ahead for guaranteed beds during the main season. Weekends fill faster than weekdays. The hut prefers telephone reservations (German language helpful but staff speak some English). Arrive by 18:00 if you've booked, or expect limited late arrivals. Payment is cash or card, though cash reserves are wise given the mountain location. Bring warm layers even in summer—weather changes fast at this elevation.
