Untere Kälberalm

Untere Kälberalm sits at 1,520m on the eastern flank of the Wetterstein range, near Mittenwald in the Bavarian Alps. Reach it in 2 to 2.5 hours from Mittenwald village by hiking south into the Kälberalm valley; the path is well-marked and gains 600m steadily through mixed forest. Most hikers use this as a staging point for Wetterstein traverses or climbs toward the Leutasch valley. The hut also serves as a rest stop on loops through the eastern Wetterstein foothills.
The alm is a traditional working dairy farm that offers accommodation and meals. It sleeps around 20 people in simple rooms and a dormitory. Full board includes breakfast and a hot evening meal; lighter refreshments are available at the hut's small café. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and the farm's schedule—contact ahead if visiting December through February. Facilities are basic: no shower, but there is running water and toilets. The proprietors are friendly and used to walkers.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially July and August; aim to reserve 4 to 6 weeks ahead. The hut is less crowded mid-week and in shoulder seasons (May–June, September–October). Winter bookings require advance notice. The hut is a DAV partner.
