Refuge Forestale Sella Canton

Rifugio Forestale Sella Canton sits at 1,332m on the Carnic Alps border between Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto. Reach it from Paularo (north of Tolmezzo) via a 2-hour forest path that climbs steadily through beech woodland. The trail is well-marked and moderate, making it accessible for most walkers. Winter access is possible but check conditions first—snow can close the approach.

The rifugio is a working forestry station with 30 beds in simple rooms. Meals focus on local mountain food: pasta, polenta, and game when available. Showers are available. The hut runs year-round, though staffing varies seasonally—confirm opening dates before visiting. It's a base for walking the Carnic ridge to the east and approaches to peaks like Monte Zermula.

Book directly by phone or email well ahead during July and August. Contact the hut at least a week before arrival outside peak season. The location attracts fewer international hikers than major CAI rifugios, so beds are usually available with reasonable notice. Expect basic but comfortable mountain hospitality rather than luxury amenities.
