Rifugio Casermette del Penna

Liguria, Italy

About

Rifugio Casermette del Penna sits at 1,430m on the ridge between Monte Penna and Monte Settepani in the Ligurian Alps. Reach it from Calizzano in 4–5 hours via the CAI trail network, or from Colle di Nava (1,269m) in 2–3 hours. The route climbs steadily through beech and fir forest before opening to alpine meadow. Most hikers approach from the south; the hut marks a key waypoint on long ridge traverses toward Monte Saccarello.

The rifugio is small, with 30 beds in simple rooms and 40 more in dormitory space. Meals are homemade and hearty—expect pasta, polenta, and local game in season. Water comes from a spring; the hut runs on gas and wood stove heat. Open year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and staff availability. No shower, no electricity in rooms. This is working-hut territory: minimal frills, solid mountain cooking, and quiet.

Book direct by calling ahead—mobile reception is patchy at this elevation. July and August fill weekends 2–3 weeks before arrival. Outside these months you can usually turn up, but phoning the day before guarantees a bed. Staff can advise on snow conditions for spring and autumn visits. The hut is closed occasionally for maintenance; confirm opening dates before planning a winter trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book 2–3 weeks ahead for weekends, especially July–August; weekdays are more flexible. Contact the rifugio directly by phone or check rifugio.net for availability and rates.
Open June through September; staffed daily during this window. Close in winter due to snow and exposure on the ridge.
From Calizzano: 4–5 hours via CAI trails through beech and fir forest to alpine meadow. From Colle di Nava: 2–3 hours, a faster approach from the north.
30 beds in simple rooms plus 40 more in a dormitory; serves meals and basic provisions. Showers are available but water is limited due to ridge location.
Better for experienced hikers: the ridge location means exposed terrain in bad weather, and the approach from Calizzano is a long day. Families with strong walkers and the Colle di Nava route are workable.
