Refuge Monte Penna

Rifugio Monte Penna sits at 1,370m on the ridge between the Aveto and Trebbia valleys in the Ligurian Apennines. The easiest approach is from Borzonasca: 2.5 hours on marked trail through beech and chestnut forest. The hut is also reachable in 3 hours from Rezzoaglio to the west, or 2 hours from the Passo del Tomarlo to the east. Most hikers approach from the Val d'Aveto side.

The rifugio offers 30 beds in shared rooms and serves hearty mountain food including fresh pasta and local Ligurian specialities. Evening meals are available with advance notice. The kitchen provides packed lunches for onward hikes. Hot showers, heating, and basic facilities are standard. The hut is staffed year-round but open primarily spring through autumn. Winter opening depends on snow and staffing—confirm before heading up in cold months.

Phone the hut directly to book: they prefer direct calls over email. Book at least a week ahead for weekends in July and August. The hut fills quickly on summer Saturdays and holiday periods. Mid-week visits rarely require advance notice. Payment is cash on arrival; check if card payments are accepted when you call. The hut is a logical hub for ridge walks across the Aveto massif.
