Refuge Don Barbera

Rifugio Don Barbera sits at 2,070m on the ridge between the Liguria and Piedmont regions, accessible from the Beigua Geopark. The standard approach is from Pratorotondo to the south, a 2.5-hour walk gaining 700m. You can also reach it from Gbegriff or Capanelle to the north in similar time. The location puts you on a major ridge traverse route, making it ideal for linking multi-day hut-to-hut trips across the western Ligurian Alps.

The rifugio holds 46 beds in shared rooms and offers half-board meals. The guardian runs a simple operation: expect basic mountain food rather than refinement, but portions are generous. Water comes from a spring. The hut opens year-round, though November to April sees reduced staffing and fewer services. Winter access requires good snow sense and often crampons above 1,800m.

Book directly by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August. May, June, September and October fill faster than you might expect because the hut sits on several well-known crossing routes. Call or email the day before arrival to confirm the guardian will be present, especially outside peak season. There's no website or online booking system, so direct contact is essential.
