About

Rifugio Bertorello sits at 1,375m in the Cottian Alps above the Val Varaita in Piedmont. Reach it from Castelnuovo on the SP94 valley road: park near the trailhead and hike 2.5 hours northeast through mixed forest and meadow. The route gains 400m steadily but without technical difficulty. Summer conditions (July–September) are reliable; spring and autumn bring mud and rockfall risk.

This is a small, working hut with 8 beds split across 2–3 rooms. The keeper serves simple dinners and breakfasts on request; bring your own lunch or arrange meals when you book. Water comes from a mountain spring. There is no electricity, heating, or shower—bring a headtorch and expect basic alpine accommodation. The hut stays open year-round but is staffed reliably only June to September.

Email the hut directly to book. Confirm availability at least one week ahead, longer in July and August. The hut fills quickly during summer weekends and school holidays. Arrive by mid-afternoon to allow time to settle before dark. Payment is cash only. Winter access requires winter mountaineering skills and prior arrangement with the keeper.
