Rifugio Regina Elena

Piedmont, Italy

About

Rifugio Regina Elena sits at 2,756m on the Gran Paradiso massif in Piedmont. Reach it from the Desinenza valley via the Valnontey approach, a 3-hour climb from the trailhead at Pont (1,680m). The hut perches on the northeast ridge, giving direct access to Gran Paradiso's summit (4,061m) in 2–3 hours. Most hikers arrive from the south via the established mule track through Valnontey.

The rifugio is a working Alpine hut, not a tourist facility. It has 70 beds split across dormitories and small rooms. Meals are substantial—expect polenta, pasta, and hearty stews. Water comes from snowmelt and a spring; the hut relies on generator power at this elevation. Open mid-June to mid-September, depending on snow conditions. Check ahead in early summer. A small shop sells snacks and emergency supplies.

Book directly by phone. July and August fill up 4–6 weeks ahead, especially weekends. Call ahead even if you plan to walk in—beds are not guaranteed. Arrive by 17:00 for dinner service. The hut is managed by CAI and listed on rifugio networks; confirm opening dates before your trip, as high-altitude snow can force late-season closures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead during peak season (July–August), especially if you're climbing Gran Paradiso the next day. Call ahead directly to confirm availability and your arrival time.
It's staffed during summer months (typically June–September), but confirm exact dates before planning your trip as Alpine hut seasons vary year to year.
Start from Pont (1,680m) in the Valnontey valley and follow the mule track for 3 hours to the hut at 2,756m. This is the standard approach from the south on well-marked terrain.
Expect dormitory-style beds (60-bed capacity), basic meals, and water; shower facilities are limited as is typical for high Alpine huts. Confirm what's included with your meal plan when booking.
The 3-hour approach is manageable for fit hikers, but this is a working hut on a serious mountaineering peak—it's best for experienced hikers planning to summit Gran Paradiso, not casual families.
