Rifugio La Viza

Rifugio La Viza sits at 1760m on the southern slopes of the Apennines, making it a solid base for day hikes across the ridgelines and into the beech forests that define this region. You can reach it from the Passo dei Mandrioli car park in roughly 90 minutes on a marked path that climbs steadily but rarely steeply through mixed woodland. The hut is also accessible from several other trailheads in the area, so it works well as a stopover on longer ridge traverses rather than a destination in itself.
The rifugio is a working mountain facility run by people who know the local trails thoroughly. It has capacity for around 50 guests in simple but clean rooms, most with 4–6 beds. The kitchen serves hearty regional food—expect pasta and meat dishes sourced locally when possible. They have hot showers, decent toilets, and heating that actually works when nights get cold. The hut opens year-round but operates on reduced schedule November through March, so contact ahead if you're planning a winter visit.
