About

Rifugio Maria sits at 2,950m on a high plateau in the central Alps, serving as a base for ascents and ridge traverses across the range. The hut is accessible via a 3-4 hour approach from the nearest road-head, gaining 1,100m of elevation over a well-marked trail. Most parties arrive mid-morning or early afternoon, allowing time to acclimate before attempting higher peaks the following day. The location puts you within striking distance of several 4,000m summits and technical rock routes that define the region.

The hut accommodates 40-50 people across mixed dormitory rooms and a few small private cells. The kitchen serves a full breakfast and a three-course evening meal, included with lodging. Water comes from a spring on the south slope—reliable year-round. The hut has basic but functional toilets and a small common area heated by a wood stove. Mobile signal is nonexistent. The hut opens from late May through early October; July and August see the highest demand. Winter access requires mountaineering skills and is infrequent.

Book directly by email or phone 6-8 weeks in advance for July and August weekends. July and early August weekdays fill 4-6 weeks ahead. June, September, and early October typically have availability with 2-3 weeks' notice. The guardian lives on-site year-round and speaks English, German, and Italian. Payment is cash only—bring enough euros to cover your stay and any extras.
