Rifugio Averau

Rifugio Averau sits at 2,413m in the Dolomites, on the Passo Ghedina between Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Ra Gusela peaks. Most hikers approach from Cortina via the Passo Ghedina trail, a 2-hour walk gaining roughly 400m. The direct approach from the valley takes 3–4 hours. The hut anchors several multi-day traverses across the Ampezzo dolomites and sits on the high-altitude ring route around Cortina.
The rifugio has 40 beds across mixed dorms and private rooms. The kitchen serves solid mountain food: pasta dishes, risotto, and local specialties. Showers are available—a genuine advantage at this elevation. There's no WiFi, which forces genuine disconnection. The hut opens mid-June through late September, with reliable staffing July through August. Half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast) is standard; packed lunches available on request.
Book directly by phone or email at least 6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Single nights are often possible outside peak season. The hut fills quickly on weekends during summer, especially for groups crossing the high routes. Confirm your arrival time when booking—they need to know if you're coming for dinner.
