Rifugio Lagazuoi sits at 2,752 m on the summit ridge of the Piccolo Lagazuoi, high above Passo Falzarego between Cortina d'Ampezzo and Alta Badia — the highest hut in the Cortina Dolomites. Built in 1964-65 by alpine guide Ugo Pompanin, it is still privately run by the Pompanin family and offers 74 beds in private rooms and dormitories, a restaurant serving Ladin-influenced cuisine, a sauna and one of the most celebrated panoramic terraces in the Alps, with views from the Tofane and Civetta to the Marmolada. The mountain itself is an open-air WWI museum: Italian and Austro-Hungarian lines ran across these slopes, and the famous Lagazuoi tunnels — a helical gallery dug inside the peak by Italian troops — can still be climbed with helmet and headlamp. Access is remarkably easy thanks to the Lagazuoi cable car from Passo Falzarego (2,105 m), which reaches the ridge just below the hut in a few minutes.
